Connecting Borland Database Engine applications to Oracle Workgroup Server 7 (Updated for Oracle 8)

by George Pujol - gpujol@interserv.com

Abstract

This document will outline the default settings for establishing a SQL*Net 2 connection between any 16 or 32-bit application running under Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95, or Windows NT, which uses the Borland Database Engine (BDE) to access an Oracle Workgroup Server (OWS) version 7, either the Netware or the NT version.

Tested Configurations

The following configurations have been successfully tested:

Server:
- Microsoft Windows NT Server Version 3.51 and 4.0 (*).
- Novell Netware Version 3.12 and 4.1(*).
- Oracle Workgroup Server for Netware Version 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3 (*).
- Oracle Workgroup Server for Windows NT Version 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3 (*).
- Oracle 8 for Windows NT (new name for Oracle Workgroup Server) (*).
- Oracle SQL*Net Server Version 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, and 8.0 (SPX, TCP/IP and Named Pipes protocols) (*).

Client:
- Borland Database Engine Version 2.52 (16-bit) (*).
- Borland Database Engine Version 3.5 and 4.0 (32-bit) (*).
- Microsoft Windows for Workgroups Version 3.11 (*).
- Microsoft Windows 95 (*).
- Microsoft Windows NT Workstation Version 3.51 and 4.0 (*).
- Microsoft ODBC SDK Version 2.01 (*).
- Oracle SQL*Net Client Version 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, and 8.0 (SPX, TCP/IP and Named Pipes protocols) (*).
- Personal Oracle Version 7.1 (*).
- Personal Oracle for Windows 95 (*).
- Oracle7 Windows ODBC Driver for SQL*Net 2.3 Version 1.15.3.0.1A (*).

For brevity sake, we will follow this convention throughout the document: all references to "x" (as in 7.x or 2.x, for example) should be replaced with the Oracle version you are using (1 for 7.1, 2 for 7.2, etc.). Oracle 8 references will all relate to version 8.0.5.

Note on Oracle 8:
This new version of the product does not change the way the BDE and SQL*Net interact, only the filenames are different. It is important to note that all client and server testing on version 8 has been done using 32-bit connections to Windows NT only.
